POPOTE NILIPO NINA RAHA

本作は、西尾自身が各地で古着を収集し作品を制作してきた活動の延長として、アフリカで古布のカンガを収集した際、その物語をまとった物質性に圧倒され、思わず写真に記録したシリーズである。穴が開き、破れたカンガも、それがれっきとした生活の記録であることを知ると、絵柄は新品以上にカラフルで、生き生きとした女性たちの物語として立ち現れてくる。一枚一枚のカンガには、古くから伝わるスワヒリのことわざや愛のメッセージなどの言葉が記されている。女性たちは、その日の自分の気持ちや考えに合わせてそれらを身にまとうのだという。本作のタイトル「POPOTE NILIPO NINA RAHA」も、収集したカンガに記されていた言葉からの引用であり、「わたしがいるところにはどこでも喜びがある」という意味をもつ。

This series emerged as an extension of Nishio’s ongoing practice of collecting used clothing in various locations and creating works from them. When he gathered secondhand kanga textiles in Africa, he was struck by their materiality imbued with lived narratives, and instinctively began documenting them through photography. Once one understands that kanga cloth bearing holes and tears constitutes a genuine record of everyday life, their patterns appear even more vibrant than when new, coming into view as vivid stories of the women who wore them. Each kanga carries printed words—Swahili proverbs and messages of love that have circulated for generations. Women choose which one to wear according to their feelings and thoughts on a given day. The title of this work, POPOTE NILIPO NINA RAHA, is also quoted from one of the collected kanga. It means, “Wherever I am, there is joy.”
