Accidental Garnish

「全身白い服を着ている時に限って、泥がはねたり、コーヒーをこぼしたり、ペンキ塗り立てのベンチに座ってしまったり……。はじめは落ち込むのだが、あまりにも汚してしまうので、逆に楽しくなっていく。さらには汚れに新たな装飾性を見い出し、自ら様々な汚れの要素を探しにいく。」

ワークショップ参加者には上記のストーリーのみを提示し、全身白い服装で実際に独自の汚れを追求してもらった。他の参加者を明かさなかったため、参加者同士も自らが汚すことでその意識を共有する人を探すことになった。

“While wearing entirely white clothes, get mud or coffee on them, or paint from sitting on a recently painted bench. It might be somewhat upsetting at first, but will become fun as you get dirtier and dirtier. Search for various ways to get dirty spots on your white clothes, and discover whole new kinds of ornamentation.”

These are instructions given to participants, none of whom know each other. They are required to wear white clothing and find spots to “garnish” their attire. Participants meet others who share the same affirmative attitude toward getting their clothes dirty. The event forms a kind of guerrilla performance as well as workshop.
