Alternative 3 Venues

Yoshinari Nishio has participated in Roppongi Art Night, an art festival held in the eponymous area of Tokyo, on three occasions: 2014, 2019, and 2023. For the 2014 edition, Nishio participated as one of the festival’s main artists, and presented large works made from old clothing in three locations: Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown, and the National Art Center, Tokyo. With the desire to exhibit the works as a giant creature inscribed with human time, and, by bringing the utterly ordinary thing that is clothing into the extraordinary festival space of the art night, to make something that remains behind in the memories of viewers and participants at this otherwise one-night-only event, Nishio created the works with the assistance of many volunteers. Taking up these ideas again, Nishio created a clothing-themed play space in a public park for the 2019 festival. People hand-washed clothes, designed clothing for playground equipment and benches, tried putting on “sandpit clothing,” and at night showed photos of local residents in their pajamas. The result was an experience in which participants could feel part of a community even within a big city. Nishio developed that sensation further to explore the theme of three “alternative venues” in the 2023 edition of Roppongi Art Night, reflecting how the festival’s main program unfolds across three locations. In a local park, junior high school, and on the ground floor of a building, he created experiences of “art as a shareable space” for learning together with residents, local junior high students, and Nishio’s university students in Nara and Tokyo.
