Bebabebag

ナイロビのストリートでは、公共交通機関のミニバスであるマタツの車掌たちが乗客を呼び込もうと叫ぶ「ベバベバ！」という音が反響している。スワヒリ語で 「運べ運べ」という意味だ。この言葉は、輸送手段を気軽に利用できないナイロビのキーワードといえるだろう。町なかのいたるところで、人びとは驚くほど大きな荷物を素手で運んでいる。見方を変えれば、お祭りやパフォーマンスのようにも見えてくる。カラフルで刺激的なマタツの座席シートと同じ素材を用いて、人びとが運ぶ巨大な荷物をかたどった鞄を作る。作り手はマタツの座席シートを毎日、縫製している職人。パフォーマーたちが不思議なカタチをした鞄を身にまとい、ストリートを行進する。当たり前の風景が少し色づき、ナイロビが日常的にはらんでいる祝祭的ムードが新しいファッションに変換される。

On the streets of Nairobi, drivers of the matatu minibuses that form the city’s public transport system call out to prospective passengers, “Beba beba.” Meaning “carry, carry” in Swahili, the phrase is a key part of life in Nairobi, where transportation is not easily available. All over the city, incredible numbers of people can be seen carrying large pieces of luggage with their bare hands. But looked at in a different way, this is like a festival or performance. In Bebabebag, people make a bag using the same material as the colorful and visually stimulating covers on the passenger seats in the matatus, and in the shape of the large pieces of luggage that people carry. The makers are the artisans who produce the matatu seat covers. Wrapped in these strangely shaped bags, performers parade through the streets. The everyday landscape acquires more color and the festive mood that fills daily life in Nairobi transforms into a new kind of fashion.
